About

We are two artists who met during our years at art college; we now live in a village located in the heart of the Austrian Alps, surrounded by the beautiful mountains that tower above the Ötztal, and that never cease to inspire us.

Irgmard’s works will be exhibited at the Weißes Kreuz, Fließ, as part of a cultural programme organised by the Museum Fließ (www.museum.fliess.at). You are warmly invited to the gallery opening on Friday 16 May at 19:00. The exhibition can be viewed on 17 & 18 May, and on 24 & 25 May between 14:00 and 17:00; it is also possible to organise personal viewings (see below for details).

Irmgard Parth

Virtually all of my work is based on my emotional response to landscape: usually, but not exclusively, the shapes of the mountains in my native Tirol.

For the woodcuts I make sketchbook drawings which have just enough information to stimulate my memory. My work does not reflect on anecdotal particulars. The prints develop through a process that has been described as “poetic recollection”. My emotional response is tempered by the rigours of making a colour woodcut: considering the shapes, harmonising the colour and making use of the grain of the wood to suggest texture. These factors lead to a pairing down, a simplification of the image which can verge on the abstract but has a firm foundation in fact.

Peter Fleming

In my paintings, I strive to share my sense of wonder when a landscape or a familiar corner of my environment is transformed by some special quality of light. In the process of painting I try to be true to the facts of the theme while communicating that magical sensation which inspired my interest. I draw and paint directly from the subject. I do not use photographs. When working on a large landscape painting I draw and make colour studies on the spot which I develop in the workshop. Drawing is the foundation of all that I do.

Sautens and the Ötztal

After living many years in London we have moved to Irmgard’s birthplace, Sautens in the Ötztal, Tirol. This area has always been an inspiration for our work. We feel deeply privileged to call this place our home and to experience the stunning beauty of this landscape as the seasons turn.

Peter and Irmgard are always happy to welcome you to their studio, in which much of their current work is displayed; visits can be made by arrangement to view their work.
